A few months ago, I wrote about getting a bit of a “new lease” on life once both boys would be in school full time. One of the things that I decided to really spend time focusing on was my health. It seems to take a backseat in motherhood. We’re always in a state of balancing the plates, but we sometimes forget that the person handling the plates needs attention as well. Whether it is time, lack of energy, getting kids wrangled, or just putting the needs of those around you before your own, there never seems to be enough hours in the day to focus on your own health.
What better way to get your health on track than to do it with friends – who may or may not have experienced the same kind of “rut” as you – finding the time and the energy to make health and wellness a priority. Enter the Walkin’ {in da} Club (Yes, lame name, lame me. It works and makes me laugh.)
The purpose of the group is to explore new areas in our geography, get out there, be ourselves, bring our kids or don’t, and most of all just be ourselves on this journey to a better “me.” Our mornings usually start around 8:30 or 9:00 am and we walk for a few miles. The first few times were ROUGH, but now I’ve found that I’m in a groove. It’s been about a month and I’m loving this time in the morning *almost* as much as I love my coffee.
Throughout the past month, I can feel my energy increasing – funny how exercise can do that to you, huh? I’m enjoying the time just being with people and not focusing on what we do or don’t need to do, not worrying about a to-do list and not answering a million requests from someone else. Knowing that there is a group of people meeting up that morning is motivation for me to get up, get out of bed, and make sure I have my walking gear on. Funny what a little good-natured peer pressure can do.
Not to mention all the (mostly) beautiful spaces we’ve been able to explore (apart from the creepy fog/forest one day). It has been a great journey so far and one that I’m looking forward to continuing to explore.
My least favorite walk – TERRIFYING
FALL! I love it ALL!!!!
We walked FOUR miles today and just a month ago, I would NEVER have envisioned that to be part of my weekly routine. It is amazing what a little focus and motivation can do.
If you’d love to join our little walking club, we meet a few times a week – no pressure, no dues, no obligations! Our only requirement is that you BE yourself – you don’t even need to show up with a smile, but we know the fresh air and easy conversation will help.
