We’ve shared elements of our home with you so far as we work to make subtle changes and the projects have certainly helped to improve the overall homey feel of our new abode. My hubby has stepped up his DIY game while I have…watched him do some pretty awesome things to our new place! So I thought it was time for me to finally tackle a project that has been sitting in my bedroom for 2+ years. This hand-me-down furniture had some great bones and I was ready to give it some personalized elements to help it match our new master bedroom suite feel.
After asking around, I landed on chalk paint for this project – I went with the Americana Decor brand that I found at Home Depot. You can also find it on Amazon if you want to find a specific color quickly. The beauty of chalk paint is that no sanding is required – a great bonus, especially with a piece with the curves and details.
To prep my piece, I laid a piece of plastic in our driveway and set the piece to pain out there. To prep, I wiped the entire piece down with hot, soapy water – making sure to get in the cracks and crevices – then allowed it to air dry.
Next, I removed the drawers and hardware. I could have painted them, but they seemed out of date, so I just removed and set to the side to use for matching a handle size later.
Once dry, I began painting with a smaller brush, working directly from the small jar.
The paint went on fairly thick, but I knew I would want a second coat rather than an aged and weathered look. Next, I moved to the drawers. The first coat was dry within a half hour. My second coat was ready shortly thereafter. I didn’t shy away from the decorative elements – I just painted right over ensuring they were completely covered. I am not a perfection, but these elements turned out just fine.
I next “sealed” the piece with Americana Decor wax – simply buffing on with a lint-free cloth that gave it a smooth finish. I left this step overnight just to ensure each area was completely dry.
Ta-da! My first furniture re-do in the books! I traded out the hardware for silver knobs I found at Target – if you see them in real life, they have some bumps and dents that make them appear a little crystallized which I love! Perfect for that shabby chic accent!
Voila! Ready to move back into our bedroom. Thanks to my friend, Erin, for styling this photograph and my friend, Kelly, for rearranging my bedroom to make this piece look great and open up the space!
What piece of furniture in your home would you love to makeover?
