Family Road Trips were always a big part of my childhood. No matter where we traveled, our main transportation was a car. We spent many hours “bonding” – a nice way of saying that we tried not to kill each other along the way. I have fond memories of traveling the U.S. in our family car and was thrilled when we decided to do the same with our own boys.
Earlier this year, we traveled to Florida and tried our best to hedge off the “Are We There Yet?” questions that seemed to rise from the backseat. In an effort to be prepared, I decided to create “Are We There Yet” road trip survival kits using surprises from Jewel-Osco in an effort ward off boredom. Even better, you can entered Jewel-Osco’s Best Road Trip Ever sweepstakes for a chance tow WIN when it comes to your next big vacation!
I put together a kit for each member of the family so when we get to those moments of “ARE WE THERE YET?!” we can reach for a bag and hopefully get the oomph we need to make it the rest of the way!
For the Kids
OREO Double Stuf cookies
Peanut Butter M&Ms pouch (LOVE because they can stand up and have a resealable zipper)
Lifesavers Gummies – 5 flavors (shareable size)
Capri-Sun juice pouches
For each of the kids, I used a gallon size baggie with a few little surprise snacks for them. I included a smaller bag with a few cookies (because OREOS!), a candy selection for them to share with each other, and a juice pouch.
As an added bonus, I created little I-Spy jars for them to look at and explore.
To create your own I-Spy containers, you will need empty dried out water bottles, rice, little trinkets (such as buttons, safety pins, and miniature toys), and glue of sorts. First, make a list of each of the trinkets that you plan to add to the bottle to make it easy to check off those items once you’ve found them. Make sure your water bottle is dry. Then pour rice in about halfway. Add a few of the trinkets. Add more rice. Repeat until finished, leaving some room for the rice to move around. Shake up the bottle. When the boredom hits, pass out your road trip survival kits and pass along the I-Spy bottles. These are also great for restaurants when you are waiting for food.
