One of my all-time favorite shows is Modern Family. The dynamics of the family members brings out real-life stories that we oftentimes find ourselves identifying with and laugh about even more knowing just how real they are. Flipping back to season 1, I’m reminded of Episode 9|Fizbo. I won’t spoil the surprise for you, but Cam dressed as a clown? I’m dead. The family puts together a HUGE celebration for Luke – all the works – including a huge bounce house for the kids to enjoy.
At any rate, we had our own version of Fizbo fun this past weekend when we were celebrating my nephew’s birthday party at his house. Shift to the backyard where a MASSIVE bounce house awaited our arrival. Kids were in and out most of the day and our boys were especially fond of this fun zone. As the day wound down, the kids were hip hopping around and enjoy the full extent of the fun over and over again. With about ten kids inside, the bounce house was rockin’.
We did what most parents do and gazed the crowd for the boys – ensuring their safety and behavior. We found Jack sitting sweetly on the deck, observing the action around him. Charlie bouncing around happily in the house.
And then it happened.
As if in slow motion, I soon saw our life mimicking Modern Family once again. The top of the house began to deflate and I heard myself say, “It’s FALLING DOWN!” as Jim jumped into action like Manny – ready to rescue at a moment’s notice. I headed to the side as children shrieked and another nephew jumped back INTO the house because he thought it was just so fun! As we struggled to hold the falling house up enough to get the rest of the kiddos out, Charlie was horrified and all I could muster was visions of Manny and Luke and heroic rescues. The whole situation was rather amusing albeit terrifying for Charlie and Jack watched on with blank-stared amusement as if not quite understanding what was happening, taking in the chaos of the moment.
This episode snippet set to classical music shows tenor of the day and once again, Modern Family nails it. Little did I know it would be a bounce house malfunction. I’m sure once Charlie is no longer traumatized he will find it just as amusing. Maybe.
