This year, my husband and I will be celebrating our fifteenth Valentine’s Day together. This heart-shaped love fest day is the perfect time to show your romantic side and perhaps try something new! After 15 years together and two kids,, we still try to make time for date night, but life and a lack of time together always seem to get in the way. While most people consider Valentine’s Day to be a greeting card holiday, my hubby has always made sure to make this a special occasion and a memorable one at that. #YoursandMine #CollectiveBias
We celebrated our first Valentine’s Day in the halls of our high school. He left to attend an auto show with one of his classes and I played the typical sad teenage girl at the fact that my first Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend would be spent solo, watching other girls receive flowers. Imagine my surprise when I opened my locker to flowers and a gigantic stuffed teddy bear! He did not disappoint. We attended our Senior prom together later that year.
He drew this for me our last year of high school. I still have this and all of our other dating memorabilia.
The next most memorable Valentine’s Day came when I attended college about an hour away. With the most romantic date night of the year falling on a weekday, I opted to work knowing that we would celebrate over the weekend when I headed back to town. After taking the order for a table of twenty, I turned around and was greeted by my handsome man and another giant teddy bear to add to our growing Valentine’s collection.
In the years that followed, we usually celebrated Valentine’s Day by walking around the pier in Chicago and dinner at a local restaurant. My most favorite Valentine’s Day story came in 2003 when our celebration wound up being something much more unexpected. Jim’s beater car took its last breath and he prepared me for Valentine’s Day by letting me know that his gift this year would not be substantial because of the large expense of the car.
We headed to the pier as we usually do and walked around, stopping to grab a bite to eat. Before we had even finished our last bites, he glanced outside, grabbed my hand and dragged me down to the other end of the pier leading me outside. The only thing outside that was of any value to me was the Ferris Wheel, but because of the cold Chicago winters, it’s always closed.
Our first official “photograph” as an engaged couple
Imagine my surprise when we burst through the doors to the outside to where I see the gigantic spinning Ferris Wheel – lit up and turned ON! With no one around, Jim paid for our trip and we grabbed our seat. He sat across from me which I thought was VERY strange considering we were on a date! As we moved towards the top, he reminded me about his lack of gifts and reminded me of the question he asked me every Valentine’s Day – “Will you be my Valentine?”
As I looked out at the city, I turned back to find us at the tip top of the Ferris Wheel on our solo ride and my then-boyfriend was on bended knee in the Ferris Wheel and he asked “Will you be my Forever Valentine?” with a beautiful ring. After coming out of my initial shock, I of course said yes and I still find that day to be one of the most romantic in our history.
Fifteen years in, over ten years of marriage and two kids later, he is still my forever Valentine.
February always gives me warm fuzzy feelings of our love and serves as a reminder that we should always try something new, not just because it’s the most romantic day of the year! An age-old love story doesn’t mean you have to lose intimacy or passion. In fact, it can serve as a way to reconnect as a couple.
