Let’s face it, the whines of “Mom! Dad! I’m borrrrrred” are enough to drive you up the wall. It can be tricky to keep the active minds and bodies of children entertained — particularly when you have to stay in.
Here are some great ideas for how to keep your kids entertained at home:
Build a fort
Grab structural supplies such as chairs, cardboard boxes and even sleeping supplies like bedding. Drape the blankets over the chairs or boxes and create a fort for your kids to live in for the day. They’ll love rearranging the ‘furniture’ (pillows and beanbags) and having a picnic lunch on the floor.
If you really want to go above and beyond, ask your local refrigerator/freezer store if you can have one of their old boxes. A massive refrigerator box filled with sleeping bags makes a very cozy reading den.
Put on an apron
Get your kids in the kitchen for a little cooking lesson. They’ll love the experience and you’ll get making dinner out of the way. Baking is loads of fun as well — who doesn’t love to lick a wooden spoon of dough or whisk of frosting?
Turn on the sprinkler
You don’t have to own a fancy kiddie pool for your kids to enjoy the summer sun. Hook a simple sprinkler onto the hose and let the little ones run through it. They’ll cool off and get some exercise at the same time. Your grass will benefit as well!
Have a dance party
Nothing livens up the hours spent inside like a little music. Put on your favorite tunes and get everyone up and dancing. When they start to lose interest? Suggest everyone goes and grabs a costume to groove to the next song in.
Host a spa
Finally, why not work in a little beauty treatment for yourself? It’s never too early to teach your kids how to give a good back massage. Or, bust out the sand toys and have the youngsters soak their toesies in a bucket. An at-home pedicure can be quite an entertaining process.
Let the creative juices flow and you can really have some fun at home this summer!
