Sometimes, the wait for something seems so much longer than the time you actually spend living out your dreams. In January 2009, Charles Aiden arrived after a long day of labor and on the coldest day of the year. We are so blessed.
Dear Charlie,
Phew! That went fast! Everyone talks about how quickly time passes, but I blinked and you turned FIVE! These past five years have flown by, but I’ve cherished every second, every moment!
Things you love: video games (who’s surprised?), technology, and the computer. You have engulfed learning and constantly ask questions about how things work. You can read (have been able to for a long while now), have started addition and subtraction with daddy and you love finding new games to play. You adore time with your cousins and friends and in the year of “FOUR,” you have tried t-ball, ball hockey, ice skating and advanced in Tae Kwon Do. You want nothing more than to play ice hockey out of all of those, so we’re building up to that. You love to help me in the kitchen and while you can sometimes be a picky eater, I am surprised when you always ask for things like raw veggies and dip, salads (especially spinach) and veggie sandwiches from Subway. You enjoy playing with friends, including our neighbors and you’ve learned to take risks – like climbing all of the different ladders at the park. You also LOVE music with particular song favorites from Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, David Guetta, the movie Frozen, and Pentatonix (who you’re basically obsessed with). You also had your very first sleepover that wasn’t with Momma or Poppy and you slept over at Uncle David’s house while Jonathan “watched” you. You also took your very first trip to Disney World and you fell in LOVE with all of the princesses. They were just as enamored with you.
Things you’re not a fan of: ending any usage of technology, picking up toys after we’ve made a mess (usually). You hate leaving somewhere when you’re sleeping over. At five you can sometimes be incredibly whiny, but on the whole, you are a stellar kiddo with a huge heart and you love to make people smile.
You still talk like you’re 35 years old. Sometimes, I think you’re wiser than I am. You remember things easily and share hugs freely. You are your own person and love to play with everything from marbles to cars to video games to ponies to dolls to LaLaLoopsies to all things purple and pink. I love that you don’t care what other people think of you and how you try your hardest at everything you do. Don’t ever lose that kindness. The world always could use more of that.
Lastly, thank you. For being the hope for your daddy and me. For being the sweet answer to years of prayers. For officially making us mommy and daddy. You were a long-awaited treasure that fulfilled all we could imagine. Our five-year-old miracle. We love you to the moon and back, sweet prince.
Love, Mommy

Happy Birthday Charlie! He sure sounds a lot like David. Some day we will get the two of them together to play!
