A few weeks ago, I started to make my Christmas list for all the people we shop for throughout November and December. Along with the typical family members, we added three teachers to the list. I’m always looking to make something for them in hopes of being original and inexpensive. Inspiration struck in the checkout aisle at Walmart when my eyes landed on Wrigley’s Extra Gum (yay, sugar-free!) I picked up a few packages of each flavor – Polar Ice, Spearmint and Peppermint.
Let the brainstorming begin! Coming from little ones, I thought the perfect way to display the gum would be in the form of a modified Gingerbread House. Using a glue gun and six packs of gum, I created the base for the house with four walls and a leaning roof. The boys loved trying to guess what the final product would look like. I chose to keep the walls one color (Spearmint) and the roof another (Peppermint).
Once I had the main foundation completed, I used leftover felt from our craft closet and created a door, doorknob and decorative wreath with bow. I glued those on as well and the look was almost complete. A little red scallop to finish off the roof and our house was built! Using what we had around the house added the perfect finishing touches. When it’s time to send them off to school, I’ll fill the middle with some themed candy and tape the bottom so it stays inside. No more useless knick-knacks and something that everyone loves – gum!
One of my husband’s favorite traditions is to stuff my stocking full of gum! I use it throughout the weeks that follow and it’s always a guessing game as to what varieties I’ll find in this year. He typically includes a pack of Extra Gum and please pass along to him if you see him that I prefer the Polar Ice flavor!
One of my other favorite ways to use Extra Gum is to RACK others! R.A.C.K. stands for Random Acts of Christmas Kindness and we love to bless others during a time that we feel so abundantly blessed ourselves. Whether it’s buying someone a cup of coffee or holding the door open for someone, have some of these put together in your car and bless others with a little Extra! You can modify the cards based on whatever the occasion.
How will you give a little Extra this season? Who deserves something Extra special?
