Last week, I had the opportunity to talk about some of the changes that were being made through the Kids LiveWell program and the National Restaurant Association. As more and more restaurants are making adjustments and changes to create healthier meals for parents and their children, as a mom, I’m excited to have some different options when heading out and about with Charlie & Jack. One of our favorite places to visit is the Shedd Aquarium and I’m proud to share that they have partnered with Healthy Fare for Kids (a national initiative) and Sodexo to offer a revamped menu that is delicious and nutritious.

With over 750,000 young aquarium guests a year, this move by the Shedd Aquarium is a timely way to help families have healthier options of their children when enjoying a day out at one of Chicago’s wonderful attractions.
Baked Cheese Quesadillas
According to Ron Nuce, Vice-President of Guest Experience, this is one of the more popular new menu items and these meals are also popular with adults who are looking for healthy meals and smaller portion sizes. The Bubble Net and Soundings Cafe restaurants have meals that incorporate chicken, turkey, and fresh seafood. Charlie and Jack would flip over the quesadillas and anything that incorporates peanut butter!

President and founder of Healthy Fare for Kids, Diane Schmidt says, “We set balanced meal guidelines that are intuitive for chefs from using antibiotic and hormone free meat and poultry to preparing foods that are lower in fat.”

Shedd is a family destination welcoming 2.17 million guests each year, approximately 35 percent of which are children. The Healthy Fare for Kids logo helps families identify nutritious options at a glance and make educated choices in Shedd’s restaurants. As always, you are welcome to bring your lunch as well, but with these healthier choices, the need to do so is somewhat lessened – especially if your trip to the Aquarium is spontaneous and you don’t have time to plan ahead.
Which new meal looks the most appealing to you? Which do you think your kids would love?

Oh yeah! Sweet potato fries please… for me… not the kids. They would like the quesadillas for sure!

I’ve been there but years ago and it was called the John Shedd Aquarium then. I like the look of those foods but sadly my picky kids wouldn’t eat any of it.
