Last year, I fell in love with the concept of giving during this Holiday season. A time to truly give of one’s self and bless others in even the smallest of ways. Last year, we worked together as a family to do random acts of kindness. You can find some of our sampling here:: Day 1//Day 2//Day 3//Day 4//Day 5.
This year, I decided to take it another step further and encourage others to do acts of kindness WITH us. I sent out emails with ideas and asked that they just bless others this time of year when we get to reflect on our own blessings and realize just how much we truly have! I’m excited to reveal some of these ventures in the next few weeks as we prepare for the birth of Jesus – the ultimate gift.
Need some ideas on how to commit a random act of kindness? Check out some of the ideas we pulled together:
Offer to watch a friend’s children for a few hours so she or he can have some time away to relax, run errands, nap.
Make a frozen meal for someone during this busy season.
Purchase a Christmas ornament and tell the cashier to just give it to the next person in line.
Put extra change in the meter for the person who will park after you.
Head to a nursing home with your family and sing Christmas carols or visit with some of the residents.
Make a sack lunch for a homeless person and deliver it when you head downtown to catch the holiday lights with family.
Pay for another couple/family at a restaurant.
Leave a tip for a waiter/waitress that equals your total bill.
Buy a gourmet dog treat for that special pooch in your life.
Let someone have your seat on the train – even if they aren’t pregnant or elderly.
Have your child create a Pinterest idea or craft and give it to an elderly neighbor or shut-in.
Create Blessing Bags for the homeless and pass them out.
Buy some coats/blankets/winter gear from the Thrift store and pass them out to people who need them.
Go through toy bins, bookshelves, and closets and collect toys, books, winter gear, clothes and drop them off at a women’s or children’s shelter.
Leave $1 at a vending machine with a candy cane and a note that says, “Your beverage is on me! Merry Christmas!”
Have extra coupons? Bless others at the grocery store or in line with yours.
Make cookies or candy & drop them off at your local fire department or police station to thank them for their service to the community.
Hold doors open throughout the season!
