Imagine my surprise when Jim offered to take the day off work today so we could head with Charlie downtown to the Taste of Chicago. This being his first trip downtown and going amongst a crowd of people, I thought Jim had gone mad, but I soon was all in! We haven’t been to the Taste in almost TEN years, having gone in high school once and vowing not to go because of the heat, the people, and the lack of funds to actually enjoy it! With the addition of “taste of” portions & prices, we found that we were able to enjoy a TON of food, without necessarily having to break the bank! We parked for an early bird rate, paying only $9 for the day with a coupon & walked our hearts out! Charlie enjoyed seeing Batavia High School’s homemade robot & loved trying all sorts of new things! Given the GORGEOUS day & the way things went, we just might be sold on the event as a whole!
Things we tried:
Jerk chicken and rice – Charlie loved rice, too spicy for me, Jim devoured
Bacon-wrapped frankfurter (Pig on a Stick) – Charlie had just a few bites, Jim and I loved! (Full Price Item, but definitely worth it)
Irish Egg Roll – Charlie – eh, Me – eh, Jim – really enjoyed the mix of flavors
Chicken Tostada Salad – Charlie liked the beans and chicken, Jim avoided like the plague & I enjoyed.
Sweet Potato Hashbrowns – Wanting to try something different than the fries, this was a complete & utter waste of any tickets, even at just a taster size! Yuck!
Cajun Meatballs – This booth had the best personality & Jim ate these all on his own (only came with two)
Goat & Jollof rice – No. With a capital N. I almost puked, we saved Charlie the trouble, and Jim agreed it had a weird taste.
BBQ Turkey Leg (Full Price) – trying to live up to the hype, this did not impress. Charlie & Jim nibbled, but we agreed we wouldn’t spend the tickets on it again.
Chocolate Ganache Espresso Tart (Full Price) – Eh. I enjoyed the flavor, but would have enjoyed more had it been warmed. Chocolate is chocolate though. Yum.
Garlic Mozzarella Cheese Bread – Yum, yum, yum. MY favorite item of the day.
Toasted Cheese Ravioli – Delicious & good sized. We agreed this was a good one!
Jim’s very first “real” job was there…he didn’t stop to say hello though….
